Aldermen voted unanimously to move forward with the creation of a special downtown tax district and the Main Street Plaza

Thursday, February 25, 2010

On Monday, February 22, Destination Rapid City and dozens of supporters presented a vision for downtown that begins with the creation of a Main Street Square and ends with a vibrant, cohesive city center that stretches from the West Boulevard Historic District to the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

Aldermen voted unanimously to move forward with the creation of a special downtown tax district that would provide the funding mechanism for the public plaza at Sixth and Main streets and future downtown projects.

The council must still officially approve the ordinance establishing the Business Improvement District, but Monday’s vote was the first step toward a goal downtown leaders have been working toward for more than a year.

Property owners, assessed based on their proximity to the core of downtown, would generate about $173,693 a year in revenue for Main Street Square operations, with the goal of the plaza eventually becoming self-sustaining.

Representatives of many community organizations, including the Rapid City Convention & Visitors Bureau, Summer Nights, Rapid City Downtown Association, Mount Rushmore Road Group, Rapid City Area Chamber of Commerce, Rapid City Economic Development Partnership and the St. Joe Investment Group, spoke in favor of the district.

Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo to be held January 29 through February 7, 2010

Tuesday, January 12, 2010
The Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo is gearing up for the 2010 Stock Show.

The South Dakota Rodeo Association (SDRA) will hold a two performance rodeo on Friday, January 29th and Saturday, January 30th at 4:00 p.m. at the Pennington County Event Center.

The SDRA Rodeo is in addition to the 13 new events that the Central States Fair added to the show last year resulting in a huge surge in attendance the first weekend.  The Central States Fair is committed to the event and the community and will continue to find and create events that will draw people to Rapid City every January.

The Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo has also announced a new event for the 2010 show.  Wednesday, February 3rd will feature the “Professional Saddle Bronc Championships” at the Pennington County Events Center starting at 7:00 p.m.  The event is part of a three stop series which will feature the top contestants from the NFR and the top competitors in the Badlands Circuit which is comprised of North & South Dakota in the PRCA circuits.

This event will bring cowboys like JJ Elshere, Ryan Elshere, Jeff Willert, Wade Sundell, and Chad Ferley, among others to match up on NFR bucking stock.

The match will have a three round format beginning with 25 contestants and advancing the top 12 to the second round.  The top six of this round will advance to the finals.  This will give the audience a chance to watch these professionals on three mounts in the same night.  It will truly be a test for these top competitors as they compete for over $10,000 in prize monies.
